Panda Dan’s Lifestyle and Tech Love blog! New Media, Marketing too…

Address to global audience (re: Virginia Massacre), Second Life updates (COKE!), and iPhone delayed again!

Today’s a sad day for the world out there… before I write about some tech love, i’d appreciate it if you read this:

Another gunman in school incident that really brings about a lot of issues…

These are the basics of the tragedy:

– Lonely,  disturbed and frustrated student loses it and takes it out on the student body

– Guns were as usual…simply bought like any other grocery.

What has brought my attention is the media’s focus on:

– his ethnicity (it wasn’t an issue when there were other shootings eg Columbine, Dow, Greenville )

– The media’s negligence to focus less on Cho as an American permanent resident but more on his Korean ethnicity.

As a person in the same ethnicity/situation as an Australian, with Korean ethnicity, I ask this question.

I’m proud of being both Australian and Korean, yet when something goes wrong it would be the ethnicity that becomes my profiling…the country that declares me has in effect disowned me, yet if I were not of a minority would this occur?

I do not hold any contempt, anger towards anyone and wish that this tragedy had never occurred but it now brings about an issue wherein, how the general population will react.

Will there be another LA riot style follow up?  Where people that are just of the same ethnicity will feel hate like those of Islamic faith?

We as fellow human beings should look at ourselves before pointing the finger at others, and I believe the media and a nation has not taken responsibility by disowning a citizen of their nation. We aren’t all perfect, I have more than many flaws but it is my solemn wish that this stems not into a rally of hate and blame, but to the addressing of errors, such as the failure to address a student that was clearly ‘disturbed’, gun laws that are too loose, student harassment, security in schools.

This is my personal take on the tragedy and I give my deepest condolences to those affected in Virginia.

Ok…so changing the subject…(sorry about the heavy tone)

So following up on Kzero’s Nic Mitham’s Second Life brand map, cool tech website ZDnet has compiled an image gallery of brands in Second life.

Coca Cola has also entered Second Life with its ‘virtual thirst‘ promo where entrants can build and launch their own designed coke machine. Checkkit (spoken like Ali G, Borat‘s alter ego)

Also the iPhone has been delayed again as this article states that it may just have been pushed to June…reasons in the article!

Hope all are well and I hope that my ‘essay’ has not offended or deterred in any way…if so please let me know but as a parting note for today…Please comment your views, on tech too mind you!

I won’t be leaving any funny pictures today, (sorry Quissay!) in remembrance of the tragedy but I will leave you with 3 quotes.

“Always remember others may hate you but those who hate you don’t win unless you hate them. And then you destroy yourself.”

President Richard Nixon

“The test of courage comes when we are in the minority. The test of tolerance comes when we are in the majority.”

Ralph W. Sockman

The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.

Mohandas Gandhi

I dream of a strong, courageous and tolerant global populace that does not long to destroy itself.

  5. I was wondering if they would focus on his ethnicity but hadn’t heard much media about it. It is very sad indeed. Why don’t they focus on something important like gun laws instead? They say that everyone has the right to own a firearm but the only reason they need one is because their neighbour has one.

Did you see this? (second life)
